Kayhan ( Tehran 1978) lives and works in Edinburgh.

My photographic journey has been profoundly shaped by Tribal Art (Primitive Art), a fascination rooted in my childhood in Iran. I aim to embody the essence of primitive artists, wielding a camera free from preconceived notions about its role. Through a fusion of imagination and visual symbolism, my goal is to capture images that express universal human experiences, transcending societal and historical boundaries.

For me, photography serves as a canvas for self-examination, offering a mirror to reflect the complexities within. My practice delves into the labyrinth of human emotions and experiences, exploring the nobility inherent in overcoming adversity and embracing the enigmatic essence of existence.

I am intrigued by photography's potential as a tool for creative expression in the hands of a primitive artist. Can it transcend mere objectivity, tapping into the emotional resonance ingrained since the dawn of humanity?

At its core, this portfolio embodies the quixotic nature of the human spirit—the relentless pursuit of ideals despite the odds. Each image becomes a chapter narrating tales of resilience, capturing moments where vulnerability intertwines with strength, unraveling the enigma of the human condition.

The subjects of my work—whether still-life compositions, portraits, or landscapes—are often found within walking distance of my studio. In many ways, my approach merges the techniques of Joseph Cornell with the aesthetic sensibilities of Irving Penn. Prioritising craftsmanship, I exclusively use an 8”x10” view camera, embracing the meticulous processes of traditional darkroom methods. This deliberate choice imbues my photographs with palpable energy and a cohesive visual identity.

I envision presenting this body of work through exhibitions, aiming to engage viewers akin to experiencing Modest Mussorgsky's piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition." Each movement corresponds to a different painting, with occasional absences, yet the overall presentation maintains a captivating equilibrium from beginning to end.
